Ukraine and the EU on the brink of isolation: Are they ready to face what lies ahead?!

In mid-August, a summit was organized between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin. The high-level meeting took place on August 15 at a U.S. military base in Anchorage, Alaska. This was the first U.S.–Russia presidential summit since the beginning of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as the first meeting of the two countries’ top officials since 2021, when then U.S. President Joseph Biden and Vladimir Putin met in Geneva. It also marked the first visit of a Russian president to the United States in over a decade.

The Alaska summit was, as expected, the primary focus of global media, state officials, and diplomats. From Ukraine’s perspective, there was particular uncertainty and skepticism regarding the bilateral meeting between the U.S. and Russian presidents, whose central topic was the war in Ukraine and attempts to reach a ceasefire agreement. Ukrainian officials, with strong diplomatic support from EU leaders and member states, stressed that ending the conflict required the presence of all parties “at the table.”

In reporting on the Alaska summit, domestic pro-regime and pro-Russian media heavily promoted the narrative of Ukraine’s and the European Union’s alleged isolation and marginalization in the negotiation process, implying that the United States under Donald Trump’s leadership and Russia alone hold the key roles in ending the conflict as well as in a broader geopolitical reconfiguration of Europe. Illustrative in this regard was the Informer portal’s article titled “Ukraine and the EU on the Brink of Isolation: Are They Ready to Face What Lies Ahead?!”

Informer emphasized that “Ukraine and the European Union will find themselves isolated on the global stage if they do not support the efforts of Russia and the United States to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.” It highlighted that “the EU and Ukraine have a choice—they can either support the peace efforts of Russia and the United States or oppose them… if Kyiv and the European war camp resist, they will isolate themselves not only from the majority of the world but from the United States in particular.” The country’s most widely read tabloid concluded that if European countries oppose a possible U.S.–Russia agreement on ending the war in Ukraine, this would “significantly weaken their ability to continue supporting Ukraine’s military actions.”

In reports of a similar nature, domestic pro-Russian media pompously underlined that “Putin and Trump achieved enormous progress” and that “a new meeting will follow soon,” while also claiming that “the West is in panic… (because) the Alaska meeting was a show full of hidden messages… (where) it is assessed that Putin got what he wanted—his return to the world stage.”

While the Trump–Putin summit in Alaska on August 15 represented a top-level event, the outcomes of the talks were limited, with no significant progress toward a peace agreement in the Russian–Ukrainian conflict or in resolving contentious U.S.–Russia issues. On a symbolic and diplomatic level, however, the Russian president undoubtedly scored a success by breaking out of “Western” international isolation. On the other hand, Donald Trump’s ambitious goal of securing steps toward a ceasefire in Ukraine through a direct meeting with Vladimir Putin remained unfulfilled. The efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, who jointly visited the White House a few days after the Alaska summit, confirm the continuation of a kind of “diplomatic theatre,” whose main aim is to ensure the ongoing engagement and support of Donald Trump’s administration.
