Manipulation regarding an old speech by Putin and the weapons from the US for Ukraine

Published on:

A Facebook post retells an old speech by Putin (albeit with falsehoods), portraying Russia as a victim of the “rotten West,” forced to defend itself with nuclear weapons, while hushing up the aggression against Ukraine and other important facts. The motive behind the post is the approval of the United States for the freer use of weapons they provide the Ukrainians with, which was limited to them so far in order not to provoke Russia

Facebook post says the following:

You did not listen to Putin during the Munich Security Conference, where he was almost begging you not to spread to our eastern borders, not to kill Russian civilians in Donbas and Luhansk, around 14,000 in number, and you did not listen to him today when Putin tells you that a weapon you can’t even imagine will be activated.

Vladimir Putin did indeed give a speech during the Munich Security Conference (video), however it was on the 10th of February 2007, when there was no war in Ukraine, so he could not have been talking about killed Russian civilians, and their number does not equal 14 thousand, which is Kremlin propaganda. It is the total amount of killed individuals in the Donbas war, both from proRussian and Ukrainian side, which includes fighters as well as civilians.

NATO is on the western borders of Russia, not the eastern—as the post claims, while Putin indeed criticized the expansion of NATO. However, NATO did not expand to the borders of Russia but has been on those borders since its founding in 1949through Norway. Later, other neighbors of Russia joined NATO: Poland (1999), the Baltic states (2004), and Finland (2023), however NATO did not expand by force, the states wanted to join it because they had bad experiences with Russia.

Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia suffered under the Russian Empire, to then gain independence, but in 1940 Moscow forcefully annexed them into the USSR. A large part of Poland was also under the Russian Empire, while in 1939 it was divided between Hitler and the USSR, only to find itself later in the Eastern bloc, under the domination of the USSR. Finland was also under the rule of the Russian tsars, while in 1939 it was attacked by the USSR, during which it lost territories.

Otherwise, the motive behind the post is the approval of the United States for a free use of weapons they provide the Ukrainians with, which was until now, limited to them in order not to provoke Russia. In that manner, the post says the following:

Yesterday, the lunatics from the West approved of weapons which will deeply attack Russia’s territory.

It was not all Western countries, but the US that removed those restrictions, while the Ukrainian attacks deep in the territory of Russia are not a novelty or a sensation.

Even Moscow was the target of Ukrainian drones numerous times, while on the 3rd of May 2023, the target was the center of the Russian rulethe Kremlin. On the 18th of January 2024 St. Petersburg, which is 900 km from Ukraine, was targeted for the first time. On the 2nd of April 2024, Tatarstan which is 1,200 km from Ukraine, was also a target. The only news now is that the attacks will be carried out with American weapons.

The post claims those missiles cannot be used without the participation of NATO forces and its satellites and navigation systems, which is a claim by Putin.

He claims the Ukrainians are incapable of handling sophisticated weapons, and that the West stands behind this. This is a known narrative according to which the Russians would easily deal with Ukraine, if the West was not behind it. However, Russia is notorious for fake news, while Putin himself claimed he does not plan on an invasion of Ukraine, so he is not a credible source.

According to the constitution, Russia considers the territories it annexed in Ukraine as its own, while the Ukrainians have long been targeting there with American weapons, so from a Russian point of view, Russia has long been targeted with those weapons, therefore it is not clear as to why a sensation is being made of this just now.

A great amount of the European part of Russia, has long been targeted, while the Ukrainians occupied part of it (in the Kursk Oblast). However, the post hushes up the fact and creates the impression that the action has just begun, casting the West in the main role.

However, the West does not participate in the war. If we were to consider the military cooperation as participation, it turns out that Iran is waging a war against Ukraine, since it provides Russia with Shahed drones, ballistic missiles and so on. Regarding North Korea, there are even serious indications that it is involved in the war. Belarus, on the other hand, was a springboard for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, so by the logic of the post, Ukraine is waging a war against multiple states.

The post further says:

Russians are preparing for this moment, NATO’s war with Russia, which is in the projections of the mad Western AngloSaxon elites.

NATO did not attack Russia, it was Russia that attacked Ukraine, that is, the Russian elites had projections for war, the West has long refrained from taking drastic action. It did not even allow Ukraine to freely use the weapons it was given, which is only now changing, barely.

Russia now has a military, or a so-called Kalashnikov economy and it plans 142 billion dollars for defense and safety in 2025, which is 40% of the total budget expenditures and 6.2 percent of the GDP, a level unseen since the Soviet times, so it is clear who wants war. There is also an increase in costs among NATO members, but not to that extent.

Finally, the post concludes:

If Russia changes the military mod from a Special military operation against the Nazi fascists of Ukraine in a declaration of war, mobilization and activation of the overall forces, adult diapers will run out from Prague to Paris.

A “special military operation” does not exist, it is a euphemism used to conceal Putin’s aggressive war, which breaches both international and Russian law, while mobilization in Russia does exist, however, it is hidden behind the euphemism “partial mobilization.”

Ukraine is not a Nazi-fascist state, it is a democratic state with a leader of Jewish origin. It also passed a law banning Nazism on the 9th of April 2024. Like everywhere else, there are followers of Nazism in Ukraine as well, but they are marginal. Ironically, in the aggression against Ukraine, Russian neo-Nazis such as Anton Raevsky and Alexey Milchakov with the Rusich Group are also involved.

In terms of fear and the mentioning of diapers, the fact that Ukraine has been granted free use of weapons shows that this fear is being overcome little by little.

Taking into account everything stated so far, we assess the post as untrue.
